Here’s to another multi-hyphenate and an inspirational interior designer - Nate Berkus of Nate Berkus Associates. He is not only one of the world’s most recognisable and probably the nicest interior designers, but also a best selling author, a television host and an executive film producer. He is the modern-age Elsie de Wolfe with his step-by-step home decorating guide and affordable tips on creating chic yet personal living spaces. His interior design work has been featured in most prestigious publications such as Architectural Digest, VOGUE, Harper’s Bazaar and House Beautiful and continues to inspire countless home owners all around the world. Included on the AD100 and Elle Decor “A-List”, Nate Berkus is one of the hottest designers in the current interior design world.

Born in 1971 to interior designer Nancy Golden, Nate Berkus has learned to appreciate harmony, quality and beauty from the very early ages. Even though he studied French and Sociology in college, he always knew that he wanted to be an interior designer. He spent a year in Paris during his college years and worked at Leslie Hindman auctioneers in Chicago, both of which helped him to develop an eye for antiques and good design. He founded his award-wining interior design firm in 1995 at the age of 24 with encouragement from his then boyfriend and created countless homes with his approachable and elevated philosophy in the last 25 years. He became America’s in-house interior designer since his first appearance on the Oprah Winfrey Show in 2002. He started his own TV show with his husband Jeremiah Brent, Nate & Jeremiah By Design, in 2017 followed by their exclusive furniture line with Living Spaces in 2018.

As the public face of contemporary home design, Nate Berkus is a true advocate of personal style and creating authentic homes that reflect the home owner’s character. The underlying philosophy in all his projects is '“your home should tell your story”. “We want to create spaces that represent the people who inhabit them and the moments that they're going to have and experience within those spaces. There’s really some tremendous power in living in a home that rises up to greet you” says Berkus. His style can be best described as “chic yet approachable” with abundance of natural materials such as leather, linen and wicker. He also has a special preference towards neutral palettes and hand-made objects to create layers and patina. Nate Berkus has a good understanding of antiques, textiles, fine art and custom design and as a result he successfully brings a timeless and refined vision to home decorating. Lisa Fine, Caroline Irving and Penny Morrison are amongst his favourite textile designers and inspiration sources. However, his biggest inspiration comes from his clients. “The truth is, the purest form of inspiration comes from people,” he says.

Celebrating 25th anniversary in the business, Nate Berkus is still running Nate Berkus Associates together with his long time Design Director and recently made partner, Lauren Buxbaum Gordon. Based in Chicago, Nate Berkus’s creative team is working on high end residential and commercial projects all around the world.

Fun Fact: In addition to all the above, Berkus served as Executive Producer of the Oscar winning movie, The Help, in 2011 and currently producing another movie.
